Ibiza Airport’s statistics serve as a prime indicator of the Pitiusas Islands’ economic activity and the evolution of tourist markets. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which significantly impacted global travel in 2020, Ibiza and Formentera have experienced a remarkable recovery and growth in tourism. According to AENA (Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea), the airport has been setting passenger traffic records since 2022. The most recent data reveals a mixed picture across different national markets: while the German market saw a slight decrease of 4.2% in passenger numbers, other key markets, including Spain, the UK, Italy, the Netherlands, and France, showed significant increases. Notably, Spain remains the largest market, with a 10.4% increase in passenger traffic, followed by the UK and Italy. Other markets, such as the Netherlands and France, continue to grow, with the Dutch market, in particular, showing a robust 11.2% increase. Surprisingly, Switzerland, Belgium, Portugal, and Austria also demonstrated notable growth, with Austria experiencing the highest increase at 69.6%. Overall, Ibiza Airport handled a record 8,931,598 passengers in the last year, doubling the number from 17 years ago and indicating a strong recovery and expansion of tourism post-COVID-19. This growth, however, raises concerns about saturation during the peak summer season. For the full article, please visit Diario de Ibiza website here.
