The State Meteorological Agency’s (Aemet) forecast for this weekend on Ibiza and Formentera indicates that the rains will continue and the northeasterly and easterly winds will pick up at sea, with a yellow alert for coastal risk. The delegate of the Aemet in the Balearic Islands, María José Guerrero, announced yesterday that the presence of the wind in the Pitiusas “will prevail until at least Sunday”.

She detailed that “the light rain will continue from today until Sunday” and insisted that “what will stand out the most is the bad state of the sea with force seven winds and waves that can reach up to four metres”. Although the months of last winter were very dry on Ibiza and Formentera, the first half of March has broken this trend, according to the Aemet. In that period, more than twice as much rain was collected on Ibiza than usual in March, with an average value of 64 litres per square meter. On Formentera, the trend has been the same, but in the case of this island the usual values for this month are tripled with 57 litres per square meter. The Aemet’s winter weather observation report highlights that while on Ibiza the normal winter rainfall is 136 litres per square metre, it has only rained 23 litres, which represents a negative anomaly of 83%. On Formentera, this anomaly has reached 80% after registering 17 litres, when the norm is 87 litres, adds the Aemet.

Rain, wind and bad seas cause cancellations

On the other hand, the ferry company Baleària reported that yesterday it had to cancel the daily connection of the fast ferry ‘Ramon Llull’, between Dénia, Ibiza and Formentera, due to bad sea conditions. On the line between the Pitiusas Islands, the four scheduled departures of the ‘Posidonia’, for cargo and passengers were suspended. Likewise, the fast ferry ‘Cecilia Payne’ did not operate on the round trip route between Palma, Ibiza and Denia.
