The forecasted rain and adverse weather conditions for this weekend have led to the cancellation of the much-anticipated Ibiza Carnival Parade, initially scheduled to take place this Saturday. According to a statement issued by Ibiza Town Hall, the event has now been rescheduled for Saturday 8 March.

In addition to the parade’s cancellation, the ‘Carnivals of the World’ event, which was due to start at 10:30 AM in Vara de Rey, has also been suspended. This multicultural celebration was set to bring a variety of costumes, performances, and international influences to the heart of Ibiza Town, but will now not take place as planned.

Despite these setbacks, the Ibiza Carnival programme remains strong, with many of the scheduled events still set to go ahead. One of the biggest highlights of the celebration, the Carnival parade, will now take place on Saturday 8 March at 11:30 AM, ensuring that the community still gets to enjoy the vibrant tradition that marks one of the most colourful and eagerly awaited events on the island’s calendar.

Francisco Torres, Ibiza’s Councillor for Festivities, expressed his regret over the postponement but assured residents and visitors that the spirit of Carnival remains alive.

“We understand the disappointment that comes with the cancellation of these key events, but the safety and well-being of our residents and visitors must come first. This year, we have put together a programme full of activities, parades, and surprises that promise to bring joy and fun to our streets. Carnival is a unique opportunity to celebrate as a community, enjoy time with family and friends, and experience the creative and playful side of Ibiza. We encourage everyone to still take part, prepare their best costumes, and embrace the festive spirit when the time comes”, said Torres.

What remains on the Ibiza Carnival agenda?

While the parade and main events have been postponed, several Carnival-related activities will continue as planned. The festivities officially begin this evening, with a range of events taking place under the tent in Vara de Rey, offering a mix of entertainment for all ages.

  • 6:00 PM – The evening kicks off with a performance by ALTV Producciones, bringing a lively show full of music, dance, and theatrics to the stage.
  • 7:00 PM – A children’s costume contest, hosted by the popular entertainer Cachirulo, will take place. Young participants can register on the spot at the event tent. Parents are encouraged to bring their little ones dressed in their most creative and imaginative costumes, as special prizes will be awarded.

More events planned for Friday 28 February

The Carnival spirit continues into Friday 28 February, when Vara de Rey will once again host a special performance by ALTV Producciones. This time, the show will be titled ‘Superheroes Save the Planet’, delivering a fun, family-friendly spectacle with an environmental message.

Later in the evening, music lovers will be treated to a special performance by Cádiz’s renowned chirigota group, Anonymus, starting at 8:00 PM. Chirigotas are a staple of Spanish Carnival culture, known for their satirical songs, witty lyrics, and lively performances. This event is expected to bring a taste of Andalusian Carnival traditions to Ibiza, offering an entertaining and comedic take on current affairs through music and theatrical storytelling.

Looking ahead: the rescheduled parade on 8 March

The newly rescheduled parade, set for Saturday 8 March at 11:30 AM, is expected to maintain all its original grandeur, with floats, dance troupes, music, and spectacular costumes filling the streets of Ibiza Town. The parade traditionally attracts a large crowd, with participants from local schools, dance academies, neighbourhood associations, and cultural groups all joining in to showcase their creativity and festive spirit.

Ibiza’s Carnival parade is one of the most awaited celebrations of the year, featuring a riot of colours, dazzling costumes, and joyful performances that reflect the island’s diverse community and love for festivities. The streets of España Avenue and Vara de Rey will be transformed into a carnival runway, where spectators can watch the parade unfold in a lively and immersive atmosphere.

Torres once again extended an invitation to the entire community, encouraging everyone to join in the fun despite the change of date.

“We have made sure that this year’s Carnival maintains all the magic and excitement it deserves. The parade may be taking place a little later than expected, but we promise it will be worth the wait. We invite everyone to mark 8 March on their calendars and get ready to experience a celebration full of joy, dance, and colour”, he added.

No changes to International Women’s Day (8 March) programme

Ibiza Town Hall has also confirmed that the rescheduling of the Carnival parade will not affect the International Women’s Day (8M) programme, which will take place on the same day, Saturday 8 March. The official Women’s Day activities will be announced shortly, ensuring that both events can coexist without disruption.

The 8M celebrations traditionally include talks, workshops, performances, and marches, all aimed at raising awareness of women’s rights and gender equality. The Town Hall has assured the public that these important events will proceed as planned, with a detailed programme to be released soon.
