How to get Sa Xanga

Sa Xanga is easily accessible by car. From Ibiza Town, head towards Ses Salines and turn left at the church of Sant Francesc. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area, from where it’s a short walk to the beach.

Alternatively, you can also take a walk along the coast from Playa d’en Bossa if the weather is not too hot.

 The cove and its surroundings

Sa Xanga is characterised by its rocky shores and crystal-clear waters, perfect for a tranquil swim. The beach is about 300 metres long and 15 metres wide, offering plenty of space to relax even during peak season.

One of the unique features of Sa Xanga is the series of traditional fishermen’s huts, or ‘casetas varadero’, lining the beach. These charming structures add a rustic touch to the landscape and are often used by sunbathers as a spot to relax and soak up the sun.

The seabed at Sa Xanga is rocky, so it’s advisable to wear water shoes to protect your feet. The shallow, clear waters make it an excellent spot for snorkelling, allowing you to explore the diverse marine life beneath the surface.

Historical significance

The history of Sa Xanga is as fascinating as its natural beauty. The Torre des Carregador, also known as Torre de sa Sal Rossa, is a prominent historical landmark. This 16th-century watchtower was built to defend the island against pirate attacks and offers panoramic views of the surrounding area. The tower is well-preserved and accessible to visitors, making it a must-see for history enthusiasts.

The cove played a crucial role in the island’s salt trade. Archaeological findings have uncovered a large stone plaza used for salt storage, reflecting the significant scale of operations in the area. Additionally, Sa Xanga was a centre for processing large tunas captured in nearby fishing nets, with the name “Xanga” derived from the Italian “chianca,” referring to the wooden benches used for cutting the fish. The site’s historical richness is evident in the remnants of ancient structures that once supported these vital economic activities.

Things to do

While Sa Xanga is perfect for a peaceful day at the beach, there are plenty of activities to enjoy:

  • Snorkelling and swimming: the clear, shallow waters are ideal for snorkelling. Bring your gear and explore the underwater world.
  • Historical exploration: visit the Torre des Carregador and imagine the life of the watchmen who once guarded the coast.
