National tourism doubles in Ibiza and Formentera from 2019

The figures published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) have proven the entrepreneurs of the hotel sector and restaurateurs correct who point to national tourism as the mainstay of the last two tourist seasons in the Pitiusas. Thus, of the 213,006 travelers who came to Ibiza and Formentera during the past month of July, 28.8% were residents in Spain, almost twice as many as in the same period of 2019, when only 14.9% of the 365,511 travelers who visited the islands were nationals. The percentage of residents increases to 37.6% of the total of 79,291 tourists who came to the Pitiusas during the month of July 2020, in full covid-19 pandemic.

On the time spent on the islands by visitors, both domestic and foreign, there is very little variation comparing the month of July this year with the same period of the previous two seasons. This July 2021, hotels totaled 996,341 overnight stays, with an average stay of 4.68 days per tourist. In the month of July 2020, 320,091 stays were recorded in the hotels of the Pitiusas, slightly lowering this average stay to 4 days. As for July 2019, the last pre-pandemic year, the average length of stay was 4.8 nights per person from a total of 1,755,539 overnight stays, according to INE data. In the Balearic Islands as a whole, the average stay was 5.3 nights per guest, only slightly surpassed by the Canary Islands, which reached 5.5, while the national average was 3.1 days.

Hotels

During last month and according to the INE estimate, 1,029 hotels were open throughout the Balearic archipelago, almost twice as many as in 2020 and 312 fewer than in the same period of 2019. Regarding the Pitiusas, in July 2021, 237 hotels have had their doors open, 81 more than in the same month of 2020, when only 156 establishments could open. In July 2019, the rate of open hotels was 299, 62 more than this year.

A total of 8,180 people worked in hospitality during July 2021, 4,292 people more than in July 2020
