Espacio Micus, a renowned gallery in Jesús, ushers in the festive season with its highly anticipated Christmas exhibition. Opening on Sunday, 1st December, the showcase unites three distinguished artists: Adriana Meunié, a textile artist from Mallorca; Ruza Spak, a painter of Polish origin; and Vicent Ferrer Barbany, a photographer born and raised in Ibiza. The diversity of their artistic languages—textile art, painting, and photography—creates an intriguing interplay of contrasts within the gallery’s minimalist and serene environment, under the direction of Katja Micus.
This seasonal exhibition is not just a celebration of art but a reflection of Espacio Micus’ commitment to fostering dialogue between varied artistic disciplines. Visitors can experience the richness of natural materials, bold colours, and architectural elegance, all under one roof, making it a cultural highlight of Ibiza’s festive calendar.
Adriana Meunié: the beauty of natural materials
Adriana Meunié’s work for this exhibition exemplifies her dedication to natural materials and her ability to transform them into evocative pieces of art. Many of the works displayed have been specifically created for Espacio Micus, a gallery she discovered only last year. Her chosen materials include wool, raffia, reed, esparto grass, and rustic cotton fabric. The result is a collection that combines traditional craftsmanship with modern artistic expression.
Her works range from large-scale wall hangings reminiscent of tapestries to framed pieces that explore the interplay of volume and texture. Common elements include rounded, flowing forms and the gentle draping of materials, with a focus on monochromatic palettes. For the first time in her career, Meunié introduces a dyed piece to her collection, adding an extra layer of depth to her artistic narrative.
The Mallorcan artist’s journey into art began after studying fashion design in Barcelona. Despite initial forays into the fashion industry, she soon realised that her passion lay elsewhere. Upon returning to Mallorca a decade ago, she began experimenting with natural fibres, blending her design background with a newfound focus on artistic exploration. Her work at Espacio Micus is a testament to this ongoing journey and her commitment to authenticity and sustainability.
Ruza Spak: circular motifs and bold colour palettes
Ruza Spak, a Polish painter who divides her time between Berlin and Ibiza, brings a dynamic energy to the exhibition with her striking acrylic works. Unlike Meunié, whose pieces were personally curated for the gallery, Spak’s selection was handpicked by Katja Micus.
Her paintings are characterised by large, circular brushstrokes that dominate the canvas, creating a sense of rhythm and movement. These motifs often contrast starkly with their backgrounds, combining black and white with bold hues such as red, yellow, and blue. The gallery displays around 20 pieces, varying in size, that showcase Spak’s ability to evoke emotion through simplicity and repetition.
Spak’s work reflects her dual cultural influences and her exploration of Ibiza’s vibrant energy. The circular forms she employs in this exhibition can be interpreted as symbols of continuity, unity, and flow—elements that resonate deeply with the natural and cultural landscape of the island.
Vicent Ferrer Barbany: a photographer’s artistic evolution
Ibiza’s own Vicent Ferrer Barbany adds a unique perspective to the exhibition with a series of nearly 40 photographs. These works span both black-and-white and colour formats, demonstrating his versatility as an artist. From detailed street photography to clean, minimalist architectural shots, Ferrer’s images highlight his evolving approach to the medium.
“My framing is open, allowing the viewer to add their own perspective”, Ferrer explains. His recent work shows a deliberate move towards abstraction, creating a photographic style that often borders on the pictorial. This transition allows his work to engage viewers on multiple levels, inviting them to see beyond the surface and interpret his pieces in their own way.
