Ibiza limits tourist cars this summer: here is what you must do before you travel

The Consell de Ibiza will launch this week the official website where tourists can apply for their permit

Tuesday, May 20 2025, 1.03pm

Ibiza is a Mediterranean paradise, a place of wild coves, pine-covered hills and sunsets that stay with you long after you leave. But like every treasure, it needs protection. With thousands of vehicles pouring in every summer, the island faces rising pressure on its natural landscapes, traffic congestion, and daily life for residents. That is why, this year, Ibiza is introducing new limits on the entry and circulation of tourist vehicles. The goal? To protect its breathtaking environment, ease the summer gridlock and ensure a more pleasant experience for everyone, visitors and locals alike.

Starting 1st June, the island will restrict the number of cars allowed onto Ibiza during the high season. If you are visiting between June and September, there is one thing you cannot ignore: your vehicle needs official permission.

5 essential facts about Ibiza’s new vehicle restrictions

  1. A permit is now mandatory
Whether you are bringing your car by ferry or planning to explore Ibiza in a camper van, you will need a permit. No exceptions. The new system caps tourist vehicles at 4,108 and hire cars at 16,000 for the summer season. Without a permit, your vehicle cannot legally circulate on the island.
  2. It costs just €1 a day, but spots are limited
To get your permit, you must pay €1 per day per vehicle. That may seem symbolic, but the number of permits is strictly limited. Once they are gone, they are gone.
  3. Rental cars are also affected
Planning to rent a car? Book early. Rental companies have their own limited quotas, and demand is expected to skyrocket once the season begins.
  4. Camper vans must have a campsite booking
Free camping is not an option under this new system. If you are coming in a camper van, you must show proof of a campsite reservation before being granted permission to drive on the island.
  5. Online application is quick and easy
The Consell de Ibiza will launch this week an official website where tourists can apply for their permit and pay the fee.

What is really happening and why it matters

Ibiza is not just another Mediterranean destination. It is a fragile ecosystem, an island where cliffs meet pine forests and secret coves whisper stories from ancient times. But over the years, the magic has been muffled by traffic, noise and overcrowding. This summer, that changes.

This regulation is not about limiting freedom. It is about rediscovering Ibiza the way it was meant to be experienced, slower, quieter, more connected.

Imagine driving along a coastal road without bumper-to-bumper traffic. Walking through Ibiza Town without the constant hum of engines. Finding a parking space without circling for 30 minutes. The new rules might just give you the Ibiza you did not know you were missing.

What you need to do before you travel

Permits are approved on a first-come, first-served basis and once the daily quotas are filled, no more will be issued.

4 reasons this could actually make your holiday better

  • Less stress, more sunset: with fewer vehicles, getting to Ibiza’s most stunning beaches will be easier and quieter.
  • Greener and cleaner: less pollution means clearer views, fresher air, and happier lungs.
  • More local, less crowded: with fewer cars, many visitors will opt to explore towns, trails and coastlines on foot or by bike, giving you a more authentic experience.
  • A travel story worth telling: be among the first to experience Ibiza’s new era of conscious tourism.
