During her stay in Ibiza, global pop star Katy Perry came across a stunning dress by local designer Jenny Guerrero (Jenny in Ibiland) in the hotel boutique where she was staying.
Drawn to the unique design, Perry hoped to add it to her wardrobe, but it was only available for rental, not for sale.
How Katy Perry discovered an Ibiza fashion gem
The story of how Katy Perry ended up wearing an Ibizan designer dress started by chance. While filming her latest music video ‘Lifetimes’ in various locations across Ibiza and Formentera, Perry was on the hunt for original and eye-catching outfits.
It was during this search that she found herself at Agora, a boutique located within the Six Senses Hotel, near Cala Xarraca. Founded by British fashion experts Tiffanie Darke and Danielle Agnelli, Agora has become a hub of sustainable luxury, offering high-end rental fashion since 2021.
The dress she couldn’t buy
Katy Perry, whose real name is Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, has built a multifaceted career as a singer, actress, model, and businesswoman.
When she browsed the rental section at Agora, she was captivated by a striking oriental-inspired dress with a satin-edged collar and a Chinese button. However, to her surprise, this unique piece, crafted by local designer Jenny Guerrero, was not available for purchase in-store, only for rent.
To own the ‘Shanghai’ dress, she would need to order it directly from the designer’s website for 750 euros.
Katy Perry’s final decision and Orlando Bloom’s role
Despite the initial disappointment, Perry ultimately chose to rent the dress for her shoot. Her husband, British actor Orlando Bloom, even filmed a portion of her music video using his phone, capturing footage of Perry in the ‘Shanghai’ dress in both futuristic and urban settings.
The dress, made from metallic vegan leather and lined with cotton, became one of the standout elements in the video, which stirred controversy for being shot in a protected dune area in Formentera.
Jenny Guerrero’s perspective on the controversy
Despite the backlash over the video’s filming location, designer Jenny Guerrero defended Katy Perry and the positive exposure she brought to Ibiza. She emphasised the importance of highlighting the island’s natural beauty in a way that is respectful and responsible, contrasting this with the island’s DJ culture, which, according to Guerrero, often promotes only the party scene.
Sustainability and Ibiza’s future in fashion
Guerrero’s brand, Jenny in Ibiland, is committed to sustainability, producing limited pieces of each design and offering custom orders for clients. “As a designer, my dream is for the garment to last a lifetime,” she explained.
Currently, she is also working on a project for C. Tangana’s stylist, Carla Paucar, further establishing herself as a key player in Ibiza’s fashion and creative scene.
