Every year on 23 April, Ibiza joins in the celebration of Sant Jordi, one of the most beloved cultural traditions in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands. Combining romance, literature and community spirit, Sant Jordi (Saint George’s Day) transforms parts of the island into colourful markets filled with books and roses, offering visitors a delightful glimpse into local customs. Whether you are a culture lover, a romantic at heart or simply looking to experience something authentic during your stay, this tradition is not to be missed.

The legend of Sant Jordi: a dragon, a princess and a blooming rose

The roots of Sant Jordi lie in a popular medieval legend that still captures the imagination today. According to the tale, a fearsome dragon once terrorised the town of Montblanc. To calm the beast, the townspeople offered a daily human sacrifice chosen by lottery. One day, the princess was selected, but before she could be devoured, a brave knight named Jordi (George) appeared. He fought the dragon and killed it with his sword. From the pool of the dragon’s blood, a rose bush miraculously bloomed. Sant Jordi picked a single red rose and gave it to the princess.

This symbolic gesture lives on today in the form of giving a red rose, representing love, courage and chivalry. The tradition of offering a book in return came much later, but has become equally important, especially in literary and cultural circles.

Why books and roses?

While the rose pays tribute to the original legend, the tradition of giving books was introduced in the 20th century. In 1926, Spanish writer and publisher Vicente Clavel proposed a celebration of books to honour the deaths of both Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare, who died (or at least, are commemorated) on 23 April. The idea was embraced by booksellers and later gained international recognition when UNESCO declared 23 April World Book and Copyright Day in 1995.

Today, Sant Jordi is a vibrant fusion of both traditions, romantic and literary, where lovers, friends and families exchange roses and books. It is a day filled with cultural pride, creativity and affection.

How Ibiza celebrates Sant Jordi

Although the tradition originates from Catalonia, Ibiza embraces Sant Jordi with its own local flavour. One of the most prominent celebrations takes place in the island’s parish of Sant Jordi de ses Salines, a small but lively village close to the airport.

Here, the community honours its patron saint with cultural activities, live music, family-friendly events and a festive atmosphere that fills the streets.

Book and rose stalls in Ibiza Town

For those staying in Ibiza Town, the heart of the Sant Jordi celebration can be found on the Passeig de Vara de Rey. This elegant, tree-lined boulevard turns into a bustling open-air book and rose market, with dozens of stalls set up by local florists, bookstores and cultural institutions. It’s the perfect place to pick up a new read or a beautiful rose for someone special.

Local schools, libraries and even the University of the Balearic Islands usually take part by organising readings, storytelling sessions and a book market. It is an ideal occasion to discover the work of local writers and learn more about Ibiza’s literary scene, an often-overlooked part of its rich cultural heritage.

A perfect day out for visitors

If you are in Ibiza in April, Sant Jordi offers a wonderful opportunity to experience the island beyond its beaches and clubs. Imagine starting your day with a stroll through the lively market at Vara de Rey, browsing books in the sunshine and picking out a freshly cut rose. Then head over to Sant Jordi village to explore its quaint streets, sample traditional pastries and join the locals in their joyful celebration.

Even if you don’t speak Catalan or Spanish, the spirit of the day transcends language. It is about kindness, culture and connection. Whether you are gifting a rose to your partner, buying a book for your children or simply enjoying the festive vibe, you will be taking part in a tradition that has been cherished for centuries.
