Nestled in the heart of Ibiza, near Sant Rafel, BIBO Park Ibiza Botánico Biotecnológico stands as a testament to the harmonious fusion of nature and cutting-edge biotechnology. This multifaceted space offers visitors an immersive experience into the unique flora of the Pityusic Islands, complemented by innovative biotechnological exhibits aimed at environmental conservation.

Origins and evolution

The inception of BIBO Park dates back to the 1990s when the vision of creating a botanical sanctuary dedicated to the native plants of Ibiza and Formentera began to take shape. Initially conceived as a cactus garden inspired by César Manrique’s work in Lanzarote, the project evolved into a comprehensive botanical and biotechnological centre.

This transformation was driven by a commitment to showcase indigenous species and integrate biotechnological advancements addressing contemporary environmental challenges. The park officially opened its doors in August 2020, marking a significant milestone in Ibiza’s environmental and educational landscape.

Exploring the botanical gardens

At the core of BIBO Park lies its meticulously curated botanical garden, which serves as a living repository of the Pityusic Islands’ diverse plant life. The garden is thoughtfully divided into various ‘phytoscenarios’, each replicating distinct natural habitats found across Ibiza and Formentera. This design allows visitors to traverse through different ecosystems, gaining insights into the ecological intricacies of the region.

The park boasts an impressive collection of over 160 plant species, including eight endemic to the Pityusic Islands. Notably, some species that have become extinct in their natural habitats are preserved here, underscoring the park’s role in conservation.

Innovative biotechnological exhibits

Beyond its botanical allure, BIBO Park distinguishes itself through the integration of state-of-the-art biotechnological installations. These exhibits not only educate visitors about sustainable technologies but also demonstrate practical applications in environmental conservation.

  • The Plant Piano: a world-first, this interactive installation allows visitors to ‘play’ music by touching plants. The plants act as biological antennas, detecting frequency changes upon contact, which are then converted into musical notes and visual displays. This exhibit exemplifies the profound connection between humans and the plant kingdom.
  • Photobioreactor: this apparatus cultivates microalgae using sunlight and carbon dioxide, showcasing a sustainable method for biomass production. Microalgae are renowned for their potential in biofuel production and carbon sequestration, making this exhibit particularly relevant in discussions about renewable energy and climate change mitigation.
  • Atmospheric Water Generators: these devices extract moisture from the air to produce potable water, highlighting innovative solutions to global water scarcity issues. By demonstrating the feasibility of harnessing atmospheric humidity, the park underscores the importance of sustainable water resources.
  • Bioo Panel: a biological battery that generates electricity through the natural processes of plants and soil microorganisms. This technology represents a leap towards green energy solutions, illustrating how biological systems can be harnessed for sustainable power generation.

Educational and Cultural Initiatives

BIBO Park is committed to fostering environmental awareness and education. The park offers guided tours in multiple languages, providing in-depth knowledge about the flora, biotechnological exhibits, and the broader ecological significance of the Pityusic Islands.

Additionally, the park hosts a variety of workshops and activities tailored for diverse audiences. These include:

  • Bonsai School: workshops that delve into the art and science of bonsai cultivation, offering participants hands-on experience in this traditional practice.
  • Butoh Dance: sessions introducing visitors to this expressive Japanese dance form, encouraging a deeper connection between movement and nature.
  • Yoga classes: conducted in the serene environment of the park, these classes promote physical well-being and mindfulness amidst natural surroundings.
  • Astronomical experiences: in collaboration with Orion Madrid, BIBO Park offers immersive experiences in Ibiza’s first planetarium. Visitors can embark on virtual journeys through the cosmos with 360° full-dome projections, participate in solar and nocturnal observations, and engage in astronomy workshops.

Community engagement and events

Demonstrating its commitment to sustainability and local culture, BIBO Park organizes the BIBO Ecomarket every Saturday. This market features organic and locally sourced products, sustainable initiatives, and environmentally responsible crafts.

Accompanied by art exhibitions, live music, and various workshops, the Ecomarket fosters a community-centric atmosphere that celebrates eco-conscious living.
