Spending the weekend in Ibiza? Here’s everything you need to know about the fearsome ‘Beast from the East’

This term refers to an influx of icy winds originating from deep within the European continent

Thursday, February 06 2025, 3.05pm

A new meteorological phenomenon is making its way towards Spain, bringing with it a noticeable drop in temperatures and the likelihood of rainfall across different regions. Dubbed the ‘Beast from the East’, this term refers to an influx of icy winds originating from deep within the European continent. As these cold air masses travel westward, they push temperatures down significantly, particularly during daylight hours.

Although Ibiza enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate throughout the year, this incoming weather system is expected to introduce a brief spell of instability, with lower temperatures, increased humidity, and intermittent showers over the weekend.

But what exactly is the ‘Beast from the East’ and why does it have such a dramatic impact? This phenomenon occurs when high-pressure systems settle over Scandinavia, causing freezing air from Siberia to surge across Europe. The strength of this cold front depends on the extent of the pressure difference between the north and south of the continent, dictating how far westward the freezing air mass will reach. In past instances, similar weather patterns have caused significant snowfall in parts of Spain, even in coastal areas. While snowfall is unlikely in Ibiza, the approaching cold front could bring unpredictable weather conditions over the next few days.

The official forecast

According to Spain’s national meteorological agency, AEMET, the current projections indicate that:

“A trend towards instability will develop across the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands due to the arrival of a polar air mass from the north. This cold air descent will encourage a cyclogenesis process in the Mediterranean, intensifying cloud formation and precipitation. While there is still considerable uncertainty regarding the exact evolution of these systems, widespread rainfall is expected across the country. In the Balearic Islands, showers are less likely but could be locally intense.”

AEMET further reports that:

“Maximum temperatures will experience a widespread drop, particularly in inland regions, though slight increases may occur in Alboran and the southeasternmost areas of the peninsula. Minimum temperatures will fall notably in the far north, central mountain areas, the Balearic Islands, and the Strait of Gibraltar, with little change elsewhere.

Frosts are expected in most interior regions of northern Spain, as well as in southeastern mountains and parts of the southern plateau, with isolated cases possible in Mallorca. Winds will be mostly light across inland Spain, dominated by westerly components, with a moderate northwesterly flow in the lower Ebro Valley. Coastal areas will experience stronger gusts, with prevailing north and east winds along the Cantabrian coastline, Alboran, and the Strait of Gibraltar. In the Mediterranean, easterly winds will shift to westerly, at times reaching strong gusts, while the Canary Islands will experience a light trade wind regime.”

How will Ibiza be affected?

Although the ‘Beast from the East’ is set to bring harsh conditions to many parts of Europe, Ibiza is not expected to experience extreme cold or severe weather events. However, residents and visitors should prepare for a few noticeable changes in the island’s usual mild winter climate.

Forecasts indicate that:

  • A gradual temperature drop will be felt over the weekend, particularly in daytime highs. While nighttime lows will also dip slightly, the most significant change will be during daylight hours when temperatures will be cooler than usual.
  • Increased cloud cover and occasional showers are expected, particularly on Saturday and Sunday. While these showers will likely be short-lived, they could be accompanied by bursts of strong winds.
  • A lower perceived temperature due to wind chill and humidity. Even if the actual temperatures do not seem dramatically different from recent weeks, the combination of colder air masses and increased moisture in the atmosphere will make it feel colder than it is.

The unpredictable nature of this type of weather system means that conditions can change quickly. Visitors planning outdoor activities should keep an eye on local forecasts and be prepared for variable weather.

Tips for staying comfortable

For those in Ibiza this weekend, a few simple precautions can make the difference between an enjoyable outing and an unexpectedly chilly experience.

  • Dress in layers: the changing conditions mean you may need extra warmth in the morning and evening, while midday temperatures could still be relatively pleasant. Layering is the best way to stay comfortable throughout the day.
  • Bring a waterproof jacket: although heavy rain is not expected, short showers are a possibility, and a light waterproof jacket can be useful.
  • Check weather updates: since this weather system is evolving, forecasts may shift slightly. Checking updates from reliable sources such as AEMET or local news outlets can help you stay prepared.
  • Be mindful of wind chill: if you are planning to be near the coast or in elevated areas, be aware that the wind can make temperatures feel several degrees colder than they actually are.

What this means for Ibiza’s winter charm

While Ibiza is best known for its summer season, the winter months have their own unique charm. The island’s mild climate usually makes it an ideal getaway during the colder months in northern Europe, offering sunny days and peaceful landscapes. Even with the arrival of this cold snap, Ibiza remains a beautiful place to enjoy nature, explore its cultural sites, and experience a different side of island life.

The ‘Beast from the East’ will bring a brief period of instability to Ibiza, but there is no cause for major concern. While the island will experience a drop in temperatures, particularly during the day, and some occasional showers, severe weather is not expected. Dressing appropriately, staying informed about the latest forecasts, and adapting plans accordingly will ensure that both residents and visitors can continue to enjoy everything Ibiza has to offer—even under cloudy skies.

So, while it may be time to dig out those extra layers, Ibiza remains a fantastic winter destination, offering a blend of crisp fresh air, dramatic landscapes, and the promise of brighter days ahead.
