This December, Ibiza marks a historic milestone: 25 years since its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Recognised on 4 December 1999, the island’s cultural and natural treasures, including its historic Dalt Vila, were acknowledged as globally significant.
To celebrate this special occasion, the Ibiza City Council and the Group of World Heritage Cities of Spain (GCPHE) have prepared an exciting programme of events. From classical music concerts to a stunning drone show, the week promises unforgettable moments for locals and visitors alike.
Here’s your guide to making the most of the celebrations.
Main events on 4 December
The official celebrations reach their peak on Wednesday, 4 December, with a series of events designed to honour Ibiza’s World Heritage status:
- Unveiling of a commemorative laque: this plaque will symbolise the 25th anniversary and pay tribute to the efforts that led to Ibiza’s recognition in 1999.
- Photographic exhibition: located in the old Town Hall, this exhibition showcases the stunning landscapes and historical landmarks that earned Ibiza its UNESCO title.
- Classical Music Concert: the Ciutat d’Eivissa Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Fernando Marina, will perform at Santo Domingo Church. Featuring internationally acclaimed violinist Lina Tur Bonet, the concert will culminate in the performance of ‘Rapsodia Patrimoni de la Humanitat‘, composed by Adolfo Villalonga.
To cap off the day, prepare to be dazzled by a drone light show above the bastion of Santa Llúcia. Featuring 220 drones, the display has been crafted by Umiles, a company renowned for their spectacular light shows at major events, including Barcelona’s La Mercè festival and Seville’s Feria de Abril.
For the best viewing experience, head to the es Martell area, where you’ll have an unobstructed view of the sky above Dalt Vila.
Pro Tip: a free bus service is available for the day’s events, with departures from Vara de Rey promenade (corner of Comte de Rosselló Street).
Closing the celebrations: candlelit concert on 8 December
The week concludes on Friday, 8 December, with an enchanting candlelit concert at Ibiza Cathedral, starting at 7:00 pm. A string quartet will perform Vivaldi’s ‘The Four Seasons‘ in this atmospheric setting illuminated by hundreds of candles.
Free transport is also available for this concert, with buses departing from the nearest stop on Avenida España to Vara de Rey.
A celebration of culture and collaboration
As part of the anniversary, the GCPHE is releasing ‘Arquitectura de la llum‘, a beautifully illustrated book featuring texts by renowned author Antonio Colinas and artwork by Patricia de Norberto. This volume is part of a special travel book collection highlighting the unique beauty of Spain’s World Heritage Cities. The book will be available for purchase, making it an excellent souvenir for culture lovers.
During a press conference to present the events, Sara Ramon, Island’s Councillor for Culture, Education, and Heritage, emphasised the importance of collaboration in preserving the island’s heritage. “The key is to work together as a team,” she stated, referring to the investments made by various administrations to protect and enhance the island’s cultural treasures.
Heritage reflections: a gathering of leaders
On Tuesday, 3 December, the Municipal Council will hold a special meeting featuring former mayors of the island. This gathering will focus on reflecting on the progress made since the UNESCO designation and its impact on both the city and the island.
One of the key topics will be the island’s participation in a transnational UNESCO bid for fortified coastal cities, set for submission in 2026. The city is collaborating with other Spanish cities, including Tortosa, Maó, Es Castell, Cartagena, and Palma, with the possibility of Melilla joining the initiative. If approved, this project could further highlight Ibiza’s historical significance on the world stage.
