The island of Ibiza will once again come alive with the pounding of runners’ feet as the 40th Ibiza Island Urban Mile takes place on Sunday, 27 October 2024, in the heart of Sant Antoni. This annual event, set against the backdrop of the island’s stunning port area, has become a celebrated occasion for locals and athletes alike, offering a day of sport, community, and healthy competition.
The event kicks off at 10 a.m., with participants of all ages and abilities competing in a series of races designed to cater to everyone, from the tiniest toddlers to seasoned veterans. With a flat, fully enclosed circuit free of traffic, the race offers a safe and enjoyable experience for all, while also providing the perfect conditions for those aiming to set a personal best.
An Urban Mile for all ages
The Ibiza Island Urban Mile prides itself on being an inclusive event, with races tailored to different age groups and fitness levels. The youngest competitors, including the Mini Baby and Baby categories, will race over short distances of 25 and 50 metres respectively. As the age categories progress, the distances increase, with the Initiation group covering 300 metres, the Benjamin group running 500 metres, the Alevin group completing 700 metres, and the Infant group tackling 900 metres.
For older participants, the challenge becomes the full mile (1,609 metres). Categories include Cadet, Youth, Junior, Under-23, Senior, and Veteran, with the latter divided into age brackets of 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, and 70 years. The Urban Mile truly lives up to its name, allowing everyone from children to octogenarians to experience the thrill of racing through Ibiza’s urban landscape.
5 km race adds extra challenge
In addition to the traditional mile races, Ibiza Island Urban Mile introduces a 5 km race for both men and women. This race, open to participants from the Youth to Veteran categories, offers a longer challenge for those who want to push themselves beyond the mile distance. Importantly, athletes can participate in both the mile and 5 km race with a single registration and timing chip, making it a perfect opportunity for those looking to test their endurance across multiple distances.
Elite athletes take centre stage
As always, the Ibiza Island Urban Mile will feature an elite race, where only invited athletes will have the chance to compete. These top-level runners, often among the best in Spain and beyond, will battle it out on the same urban circuit, giving spectators a chance to witness high-level competition up close. The elite race serves as a highlight of the event, showcasing the speed and skill of some of the finest runners in the sport.
Affordable and accessible for all
One of the key appeals of the Ibiza Island Urban Mile is its accessibility. Participation is free for all categories up to the Cadet level, allowing young athletes to join in without cost. For those aged Youth and above, including participants in the 5 km race, the registration fee is set at a modest €10. Given the opportunity to compete in both the mile and the 5 km race, this offers excellent value for athletes looking to challenge themselves in multiple events.
All participants, regardless of age or ability, will receive a commemorative t-shirt upon completing their race, providing a lasting memento of their achievement and involvement in this iconic event.
A community celebration
The 40th Ibiza Island Urban Mile is more than just a series of races; it’s a celebration of sport, community, and the spirit of competition. Organised by the local Club JASA, the event has become a staple in Ibiza’s sporting calendar, drawing participants from across the island and further afield. The flat, urban circuit, which winds through the port area in front of Sant Antoni’s town hall, offers spectators an excellent view of the action, ensuring that the day is as enjoyable for those watching as it is for those competing.
The three-and-a-half-lap course offers a fast and exciting race, with participants vying for glory in front of a supportive crowd. With separate races for men and women in each category, the event ensures that everyone gets their moment to shine.
The 40th Ibiza Island Urban Mile promises to be another fantastic day of running and community spirit. Whether you’re a seasoned runner looking to test your speed in the elite mile or a parent cheering on your child in their first race, the event offers something for everyone.
